Description

NGC 3368 (Messier 96, M96) is an intermediate spiral galaxy located at a distance of 31 million light years from Earth.  It has diameter of about 100,000 light years, making it roughly the same size as the Milky Way.  NGC 3368, is not a symmetrical galaxy.  Its core is displaced from the center, its gas and dust are distributed asymmetrically and its spiral arms are ill-defined.  This asymmetry is likely caused by the gravitational pull of other nearby galaxies.  A distant edge on galaxy behind NGC 3368 is seen as a yellowish glow through the outer arm in the lower part of the galaxy in this image.
